Nangal, October 2: Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains has assured that every possible effort is being made to save Gurpreet Singh, a young man from Nangal tehsil who is facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia. The Punjab government is in continuous contact with the Union Ministry of External Affairs to seek relief in the case.

Harjot Singh Bains, who is also the MLA from Sri Anandpur Sahib, said he is in regular contact with Gurpreet Singh’s family, particularly his mother. He confirmed that the matter has been brought to the attention of the Central Government and that a mercy petition has already been filed to seek relief for the young man.

The minister said the Punjab government is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs and exploring all possible legal options to help Gurpreet Singh. He also assured the family that the government would continue its efforts during this difficult time.

According to available information, Gurpreet Singh belongs to Patti Lower village near Nangal. He travelled abroad around four years ago in search of employment. Initially, he worked as a truck driver in Muscat before moving to Saudi Arabia.

As per his family’s account, Gurpreet was arrested around two years ago after alleged narcotic substances were reportedly found in his truck. His family maintains that he is innocent and has appealed to both the Punjab and Central governments to intervene and help secure relief from the sentence.

Harjot Singh Bains reiterated that the government is committed to extending all possible assistance to Gurpreet Singh’s family. Efforts will continue to seek relief in the case and, if possible, ensure his safe return to India.
