NZ vs SL: New Zealand knock Sri Lanka out of T20 World Cup 2026 with 61-run win in Colombo

Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup came to an end after a heavy 61-run defeat against New Zealand national cricket team in Colombo on February 25.

After already losing their first Super Eight match to England cricket team, the hosts needed a win to stay in contention. However, the loss to New Zealand confirmed their elimination from the tournament, despite having one remaining fixture against Pakistan national cricket team.

An important 84-run partnership between Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie revived New Zealand after a difficult phase, while Rachin Ravindra’s four-wicket haul ensured a commanding victory.

Asked to bat first, New Zealand struggled early. Although they added 30 runs for the opening wicket, Sri Lanka’s bowlers reduced them to 84 for 6 in 12.1 overs. With the home crowd sensing a possible advantage, Santner and McConchie steadied the innings with a crucial 84-run stand that shifted the momentum.

The pair made the most of the death overs, punishing loose deliveries as Sri Lanka conceded several full tosses. New Zealand eventually finished on 168 for 7 in their 20 overs. For Sri Lanka, Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera claimed three wickets each, while Dunith Wellalage picked up one.

In response, Sri Lanka never built momentum. Star opener Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for a golden duck by Matt Henry. Wickets fell at regular intervals, and no significant partnerships were formed. Ravindra’s left-arm spin proved decisive as the pitch began to assist the spinners.

Ravindra dismantled the middle order to finish with four wickets, while Santner and Glenn Phillips took one each. Sri Lanka were restricted to 107 for 8 in 20 overs, well short of the target. Kamindu Mendis was their highest scorer with 31 runs.

Ravindra was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, having scored 32 runs earlier and then taking four wickets.
