Jalandhar, September 30: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the BJP would work towards making Punjab free from the illegal drug trade by December 31, 2029, if the party is voted to power in the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Shah made the announcement while addressing the concluding programme of the BJP’s Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra in Jalandhar on Wednesday. The campaign was organised across Punjab with the issue of drug abuse at its centre.

The 13-day campaign travelled through all 117 Assembly constituencies and covered nearly 4,000 kilometres across the state. The campaign aimed to highlight the issue of drug abuse and seek public support for efforts to tackle the illegal drug trade.

During his address, Shah said that eliminating drugs from Punjab would be a major focus of the BJP’s campaign for the 2027 Assembly elections. He also criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government over the drug issue and alleged that the illegal trade of synthetic drugs had continued to grow in the state.

Shah said that if the BJP forms the government in Punjab, the party would take steps to curb the illegal drug trade and work towards achieving a drug-free state by the announced deadline.

The Union Home Minister’s statement comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with drug abuse expected to remain an important issue in the state’s political discourse.

The Jalandhar event marked the conclusion of the BJP’s statewide Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra, which was launched earlier this month and passed through different parts of Punjab.
