Tractor rallies by Badals a mere ploy to grab eyeballs: Harpal Singh Cheema

Chandigarh, October 1

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab senior leader and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema, terming the tractor rallies being staged by Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) from three Takhts Sahibs in Punjab as a mere drama to stay relevant in state politics and its regain its lost political ground by exploiting religious sentiments of the Sikhs and Nanak Naam Leva Sangat, leaving them to rue and rant resignation.

In a statement issued from party headquarters, Harpal Singh Cheema said that SAD (Badal), which claims to be a champion of the farmers in the state, was enacting a mere drama, pretending to be farmer-friendly, which was nothing but a pack of lies. Cheema said that till the time the Modi government at the centre was toying with bringing in the anti-farmer Bills, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal had been singing paeans in favour of the BJP and the anti-agriculture black laws, adding that he continued to peddle lies saying they were in larger interest of the farmers. Cheema said when the farmers’ organizations in Punjab and the Aam Aadmi Party and the conscious thinking of the agriculture experts gained ground, the duo changed color like a chameleon and manoeuvred a U-turn on the issue just to save their own skin.

The LoP said that the Badal duo (Sukhbir and Harsimrat Kaur) had invited union Agriculture Minister Narinder Singh Tomar to Chandigarh, where he, at a press conference, had enumerated the benefits of the black laws with the Badals endorsing the views. Cheema added that when the worrisome farmers associations in Punjab, well aware of the disastrous ramifications of the contentious Bills, laid siege of the Badals’ residences and stormed the streets, the Badals saw their political ground slipping, forcing them to pull out of the alliance with the BJP.

Harpal Singh Cheema said “I would like to make one thing categorically clear to the Badals that now the farmers and people of Punjab will not fall prey to their nefarious designs, because they had had enough of it in the past. Aren’t people of Punjab aware of the fact that they were instrumental in clearing passage of the controversial anti-agriculture Bills to the detriment of the farmers”.
